David Yamada is a Professor of Law and Director of the New Workplace Institute at Suffolk University Law School in Boston. A widely recognized authority on workplace bullying, mobbing, and abuse, he has authored leading law review articles and book chapters on the topic and is the primary drafter of model workplace anti-bullying legislation used as a template for law reform efforts in the U.S. His 2000 law review article in the Georgetown Law Journal was the first comprehensive analysis of the legal implications of workplace bullying under U.S. employment law.

David is also a leader in the therapeutic jurisprudence movement, a multidisciplinary field of legal theory and practice that supports the therapeutic design and application of laws, legal procedures, and legal institutions. In 2017, he became the founding board chair of the International Society for Therapeutic Jurisprudence. His 2021 examination of therapeutic jurisprudence, published in the University of Miami Law Review, is the most thorough review and assessment of the field to date.

David’s Minding the Workplace blog is a popular source of commentary on work, workers, and workplaces that has attracted over 1.45 million page views and been cited in numerous articles and books. He has been frequently sought out by the media on topics related to his work, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, Chronicle of Higher Education, Bloomberg, Associated Press, National Public Radio, MSNBC, ProPublica.

Before entering law teaching, David was a practicing public interest lawyer, first as an appellate public defender at the New York City Legal Aid Society, then as an assistant attorney general in the Labor Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office. He earned his J.D. degree from New York University School of Law.
